Welcome to Sarahmorshead.com!

I specialize in abstract art, and have developed my practice in painting, drawing and printing since my Fine Art BA Honours Degree in 1993.

Originally from England (London and Devon), I'm (since September this year!)a Rwandan based artist, at least for the moment anyway. Since 1993 I've travelled widely in Europe, living & working in France, Portugal, Italy & the Netherlands, & Ireland with also a few years in London. I came to Ireland in 2003 for just a month, and ended up staying for 12 years, only leaving this summer!

‘Colour is central to my paintings, as is exploration, the subconscious, intuition, the rational, and the play between all of these. My work is mostly abstract/non figurative but not exclusively so, as drawing from life forms a large part of my practice. Painting and drawing are a means through which I explore and celebrate life, and being alive. It's through art that I strive to gain a greater understanding of things - my interior world and external one, and of the many indefinable spaces in between. I strive to help each painting to find its own voice, and ‘sing its own song’.’

Here are some of the recurring themes which I explore in my art work and in some of the workshops that I run:

• Abstraction as realism; realism as abstraction; 'realism' and 'abstraction' fused/combined within the same picture space (current interest)

• Drawing from life as a developed a discipline in itself, which in turn feeds into my abstract work

• The boundaries of drawing and painting and where they meet and cross over. Drawing in painting

• The subconscious, the intuitive, and the rational, and the play between them

• Free gesture and mark making; controlled gesture and mark making

• Materials: their limits and behaviours through the practice of painting and drawing

• Exploration, and experimentation leading to new discoveries and area’s of interest
